How Durable Are Porcelain Veneers Vs. Real Teeth?

At Schultz Center for Dentistry, we offer many procedures to enhance the health and appearance of our patients’ teeth and gums. Our overall goal is to create a more beautiful and durable smile for our patients. For many dental concerns, porcelain veneers can help us achieve that goal.

Porcelain dental veneer treatments are customizable procedures that utilize thin ceramic shells to cover the front portion of affected teeth. They have a similar fit and feel to real teeth and can conceal chips, gaps, cracks, discolorations, or cases of mild misalignment. For these reasons, they are most often used as a cosmetic enhancement; however, they offer functional benefits as well.

It is important to note that porcelain veneers and real teeth are comparable in durability. While veneers and natural teeth typically have very strong compositions, they can also crack, chip, or fracture if they are not protected from harm. This is especially true when eating certain types of foods, such as kernels, nuts, or seeds. Clenching or grinding your teeth or using your teeth as tools can also affect the veneers, just as they would with real teeth.

If you choose porcelain veneers to enhance the appearance of your teeth, they can last for many years with proper care. This includes a daily dental hygiene routine of brushing and flossing, as well as check-up appointments with the dentist at least twice per year.

At Schultz Center for Dentistry, we believe porcelain veneers can often be very good options for patients who wish to enhance the appearance of their smile. If you have any other questions about porcelain veneers, please contact our office today.
